2026 midterms

How our midterm forecast did

We don't have a model built for elections. Our forecast came from the same synthetic population we use for brand research, calibrated to the 2024 results, without a single 2026 poll.

Called right and missed

Called races are in the winner's color, and races not called yet are grey. Stripes mark the ones we called wrong.

Our scorecard

We picked the winner in 96% of the races called so far. Our Senate misses were Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina, and Texas was our only miss among governors. The other 13 were House seats. Every race we missed went to the Democrat.

Called so farPicked rightAverage miss
Senate33 of 3530 of 33 (91%)3.1 points
Governors33 of 3632 of 33 (97%)3.7 points
House370 of 435357 of 370 (96%)3.8 points
All races436419 of 436 (96%)3.8 points

The average miss compares our share for the first-named candidate in each race, the Democrat or the independent running against a Republican, with the share of the vote for the two main candidates they got. Our shares leaned Republican. On average we had the Democratic side 2.9 points too low.

How our odds held up

Called races by the rating we published, leaving out the 9 seats only one party could win.

When we were confident, we were right 99% of the time. Of the 383 called races we rated Likely or Safe, 379 went the way we said.

Leader's chance in our forecastLeader won
Toss-up50 to 60%8 of 12 (67%)
Lean60 to 80%23 of 32 (72%)
Likely80 to 95%65 of 69 (94%)
Safe95% and up314 of 314 (100%)

Leaders in Lean races, a 60 to 80% chance in our forecast, won 72% of the time, and those in Likely races, 80 to 95%, won 94%. In every group, leaders won at least as often as our odds said.

The races we missed

Our rating is the one we published. Shares are the first-named candidate's share of the vote for the two main candidates. Off by is our share minus the result, in points. Toss-ups first.

None of these 17 races was rated Safe in our forecast. We had 4 as toss-ups, 9 as Lean R and 4 as Likely R.

Results: unofficial counts and race calls from civicAPI as of 8:48 AM EST on November 4. A race counts once civicAPI calls it. Shares count only the votes for the two main candidates, the basis of our forecast, so they can differ from shares of all votes cast. Our forecast was published October 30, 2026.
